Overview

Adobe has recently announced that it is transitioning its eBook platform to Wipro, which will operate the service under the new name ByteBooks.

As part of this transition, the Adobe ID sign-in method used by Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is being retired and replaced with ByteBooks account sign-in.

This change only affects a small number of users. Adobe Digital Editions is older method of downloading and reading eBooks, and the transition only impacts users who currently use ADE to download eBooks to their reading devices. Most users who read

eBooks use the browser or Libby app, which are not affected by this transition.

The change affects eBook downloads through OverDrive and Cantook, when those downloads are opened and managed using Adobe Digital Editions.

What Is Changing?

As of Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Adobe ID authorization will no longer be available for new Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) installations.

Users who install ADE for the first time and attempt to sign in with an Adobe ID will receive an error message directing them to create a ByteBooks account instead.

Going forward, ADE users will authorize their devices using a ByteBooks account.

What is not changing?

The following aspects of your eBook experience will remain unchanged:

  • Your existing eBook library will remain available
  • Your eBook licenses and access rights will be preserved
  • Your email address associated with your account will remain the same
  • Your borrowing and purchase history will be retained, as it is linked to your email address
  • Your ability to borrow, download, and read supported eBooks will continue as before

Who Is Affected?

This change primarily affects:

  • Users installing Adobe Digital Editions for the first time on or after June 23, 2026
  • Existing users who reinstall ADE on a new device and need to authorize the application again

Users who already have ADE installed and authorized may continue using their existing installation until reauthorization is required.

What do I need to do?

If you are setting up ADE after June 23, 2026:

  1. Install Adobe Digital Editions
  2. Create a ByteBooks account when prompted
  3. Sign in using your ByteBooks credentials to authorize ADE

Using the same email address previously associated with your Adobe ID is recommended to ensure continuity of your eBook library and borrowing history.

Will I lose access to my existing eBooks?

No. Your eBooks will remain available. The change affects the sign-in and authorization service only and does not impact on your existing content.

Do I need to create a new account?

Yes. If you are authorizing a new ADE installation after June 23, 2026, you will need to create a ByteBooks account, even if you previously used an Adobe ID for ADE authorization.

Should I use the same email address?

Yes. Using the same email address that was previously associated with your Adobe ID is strongly recommended. This helps ensure that your existing borrowing history can be recognized and retained.

What happens if I try to sign-in with an Adobe ID?

Users attempting to authorize a new ADE installation with an Adobe ID after June 23, 2026, will receive an error message indicating that Adobe ID authorization is no longer supported and directing them to create a ByteBooks account.

Does this affect Library eBooks?

No. Library borrowing services will continue to function normally. The only change is the account used to authorize Adobe Digital Editions.
